Sarasota Performing Arts Foundation Gala Raises Nearly $1.4 Million for Arts Education

The Sarasota Performing Arts Foundation’s 24th Annual Gala, held March 6, raised nearly $1.4 million in support of the Foundation’s education and community engagement programs, which reach more than 40,000 students, educators, and families each year.

“The evening was a celebration of community, generosity, and the power of the arts to spark creativity, open doors, and ensure transformative arts experiences are accessible to all,” said Tania Castroverde Moskalenko, Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation.

Set against the scenic backdrop of The Bay, more than 340 distinguished guests gathered for an evening inspired by its musical headliner, Tony Award®–winning performer Idina Menzel. Titled Defying Expectations: An Evening in Three Acts, the event unfolded as a theatrical experience with a “Frozen”-themed cocktail hour, a “Wicked”-inspired dinner, and a lively “Rent” after-party, each reflecting iconic moments from Menzel’s celebrated career.

The Gala was chaired by Foundation board member Jim Matras and Melba Ramirez, whose leadership and dedication helped bring the evening to life. During the program, Jim and Susan Travers were presented with the Foundation’s 2026 Patron of the Arts Award in recognition of their extraordinary generosity, leadership, and enduring impact on Sarasota’s vibrant arts community.

Another highlight of the evening was the announcement of this year’s Appleton Award recipients, honoring and recognizing educators across the Gulf Coast region who creatively integrate the arts into their classrooms to enrich learning. This year’s honorees were Stephanie Cavalier of North Port High School, Mary Ward of Ashton Elementary School, and Monessa Salley a Teaching Artist with the Foundation and the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. Each will receive a cash award to continue their professional development.

Proceeds from the evening will directly support the Foundation and Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall arts education initiatives throughout the region.
